Mündliche Prüfung
Ace your partner exam with confidence and interaction skills
Learn about the three phases of the 15-minute oral exam, how to interact with your partner, and how to use your 20 minutes of preparation time.
Exam format
The three oral exam phases
- Part 1 — Kontaktaufnahme: socializing and getting to know each other.
- Part 2 — Discuss a topic and share opinions using a short text as a prompt.
- Part 3 — Gemeinsam etwas planen: plan an activity together with your partner.
Preparation time
You have 20 minutes before the exam to prepare. You can take notes on the provided paper, but you may not read full sentences aloud during the test.
Practical tips
It is a dialogue, not a monologue
In all three parts, the examiners want to see you interact. Ask your partner questions (Und was denkst du?), react to their ideas, and actively listen.
Prepare standard phrases for Part 3
Memorize phrases for making suggestions (Wie wäre es, wenn...), agreeing (Das ist eine tolle Idee), and disagreeing politely (Ich bin mir nicht sicher, vielleicht sollten wir eher...).
Common mistakes
Reading from your notes
If you read complete sentences from your preparation notes, the examiners will lower your score. Only write down keywords and speak freely.
Letting the partner do all the work
If you only say "Ja" or "Nein" and let your partner lead the entire conversation, you will lose points for lack of interaction. Take initiative!
