Leseverstehen & Sprachbausteine

Master reading and language blocks on the TELC B1 exam

Understand the exact structure of the 90-minute reading and grammar section, how tasks are graded, and effective strategies for each part.

Exam format

The three Reading parts (Leseverstehen)

  • Part 1 — Match 5 headings to 5 short texts (global comprehension).
  • Part 2 — Read a longer article and answer 5 multiple-choice questions (detail comprehension).
  • Part 3 — Match 10 situations to 12 advertisements; two situations have no matching ad (selective comprehension).

The two Language Blocks (Sprachbausteine)

  • Part 1 — Multiple-choice cloze (a / b / c) in an informal text or email.
  • Part 2 — Matching cloze: pick from a word list (a–o) to fill 10 gaps in a formal text.

Practical tips

  • Skip the "zero" ads in Reading Part 3 quickly

In Part 3, there are always two situations that cannot be solved with the given ads. Mark them with an "x" and move on instead of wasting time.

  • Sprachbausteine: Look at the surrounding words

Grammar gaps often depend on a specific preposition, case, or connector earlier or later in the sentence. Do not just translate the missing word.

Common mistakes

Running out of time

You have 90 minutes for both Reading and Sprachbausteine. Many students spend too much time on Reading Part 2 and rush the grammar section. Allocate exactly 20 minutes for Sprachbausteine.

Overthinking Reading Part 1

Part 1 tests global comprehension. Do not get stuck on unknown vocabulary. Focus on the main topic and match it to the broad headings.
