The TELC B1 Mündliche Prüfung is worth 75 points and lasts about 15 minutes. You usually test with a partner (Mitprüfling) and complete three tasks: introduction, discussion, and collaborative planning.

Task 1: Introduction (Sich vorstellen)
You receive three prompt cards (e.g. Hobby, Beruf, Wohnort). Pick what to cover — you do not need all three in depth.
High-scoring moves:
- Speak in full sentences, not word lists
- Use weil and deshalb clauses
- Mention one past experience (Früher habe ich…, aber jetzt…)
Avoid: Memorised monologues. Examiners notice scripted speech.
Task 2: Discussion (Thema diskutieren)
You and your partner receive a topic (e.g. Sollte man im Homeoffice arbeiten?). Give opinions and react to your partner.

High-scoring moves: Ask follow-up questions. Disagree politely. Use Konjunktiv II (Ich würde lieber…).
Task 3: Planning together (Gemeinsam planen)
Plan a real activity: a birthday party, day trip, or team event. You must negotiate — not just agree.
Structure:
- Suggest an idea (Wie wäre es, wenn wir…?)
- React to partner's suggestions (Das ist eine gute Idee, aber…)
- Agree on details: time, place, budget, tasks
High-scoring moves: Divide tasks (Du kannst…, und ich…). Summarise the plan at the end.

What if my partner speaks much better or worse than me?
Examiners score you individually. Help a weak partner with simple questions — it shows interaction skills.
Can I bring notes?
No. Prompt cards are provided; no external notes allowed.
Is the oral exam on the same day as written?
Usually yes, or within a few days. Confirm with your centre when registering.
How many points do I need to pass the oral section?
At least 45/75 (60%) in the oral part, and 180/300 overall. See grading system.
