TELC B1 Hörverstehen is worth 75 of your 300 total points — the same weight as Leseverstehen. You get roughly 30 minutes for three parts: global comprehension, detail comprehension, and selective comprehension.
This guide breaks down each Teil, what examiners test, and how to score reliably.
Hörverstehen overview
| Part | Skill tested | Typical format | Points per item |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Global (gist) | Short texts + true/false or matching | 3.75 |
| Teil 2 | Detail | Longer dialogue or report + MC questions | 3.75 |
| Teil 3 | Selective | Multiple speakers; match statements to people | 3.75 |
Each correct answer = 3.75 points (20 questions × 3.75 = 75).

Teil 1 — Global comprehension
You hear several short recordings (announcements, voicemails, snippets). Tasks test whether you grasp the main message, not every word.
Strategy:
- Read all questions before the audio starts
- Underline keywords (Termin, Verspätung, Adresse, Preis)
- On first listen, decide true/false or pick the headline — do not wait for a second pass unless allowed
Common trap: Distractors use vocabulary from the audio in the wrong context.
Teil 2 — Detail comprehension
One longer recording (interview, radio segment, conversation). Five multiple-choice questions (a/b/c).
Strategy:
- Skim questions first — know what you are listening for
- Eliminate obviously wrong options after the first listen
- Use the second listen only for unanswered questions
Common trap: Choosing an answer that is partially true but misses the question focus.
Teil 3 — Selective comprehension
Several speakers (e.g. four people discuss holiday plans). Match ten statements to the correct person — two statements match nobody.
Strategy:
- Note each speaker's name or letter at the start
- Write one keyword per speaker as they talk (Meer, teuer, zu laut)
- Mark impossible matches with x early — same tactic as Leseverstehen Teil 3

FAQ
Can I pass TELC B1 with weak listening?
TELC uses compensatory scoring — strong reading can offset listening. But 75 points is too large to ignore; aim for at least 60% in Hörverstehen.
Are accents standard Hochdeutsch?
Mostly yes, with occasional regional colour. Practice with Tagesschau, ARD podcasts, and mock audio.
How is listening different from Goethe B1?
Format is similar; TELC Teil 3's multi-speaker matching is distinctive. Our TELC vs Goethe comparison covers the full picture.
